Understanding the Drivers of Negative Attitudes Toward Refugees: A New Research Initiative by İGAM

05.02.2026

Building on İGAM’s previous research examining the social media discourse of prominent political figures and political party narratives on refugees, İGAM has launched a new study aimed at identifying the key drivers behind negative public attitudes toward refugees in Türkiye.

The earlier research analysed the statements and digital communications of leading political actors; Tanju Özcan, Meral Akşener, Ümit Özdağ, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and Muharrem İnce alongside party programmes and election manifestos. Using the Syrians Barometer 2023 framework, the study assessed how refugees are framed within political, demographic, economic, and public safety narratives, highlighting patterns that contribute to exclusionary and hate-based discourse.

Building on these findings, the new research seeks to move beyond discourse analysis to better understand the underlying social, political, and informational factors that shape negative perceptions and public attitudes. The study aims to generate evidence-based insights that can inform advocacy strategies, counter-narratives, and more constructive public communication on migration and refugee rights.

The research is being conducted by Esra Yurtseven. The concept paper outlining the study’s objectives and analytical framework is now availlable using this link, and the full report will be published shortly.
