Refugee Council of Turkey - TMK

Strengthening of Turkey Refugee Council Project

The Refugee Council of Turkey (TMK) was founded in 2016 as a civil society network bringing together refugee-led organizations and host community civil society organizations (CSOs) under the same umbrella. It was established by a group of CSOs in response to the need they perceived for better coordination and cooperation amongst refugee-led, local and national organizations working with diverse refugee and host communities in all parts of Turkey. The TMK exists to enable more effective and impactful collaboration amongst these actors. It supports them to jointly advocate for better policies and programs for refugees and host communities and to contribute to the improvement of international humanitarian and refugee protection policy and practice by sharing lessons learned with their counterparts in other countries. Members build strategic relations with municipalities, ministries and government agencies, bilateral and multilateral donors, and others to achieve these aims.

The TMK currently has over 20 members in its network, including both refugee-led and host community organizations. Members work in diverse areas ranging from improving refugees’ access to education, legal status, and rights, to livelihoods and employment, and the situation of women refugees, amongst others. Members carry out a wide range of activities, from delivering services, advocating for the rights of refugees and host communities, and carrying out research and policy analysis. The network extends across more than 60 of Turkey’s 81 provinces and encompasses refugees from a variety of countries of origin, including Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq amongst others. Its members participate in a wide range of other networks and platforms at local, national, and international levels.

The TMK's goal is to expand its reach as a convener of diverse actors working on refugee issues in Turkey, and to drive creative and effective collaborations amongst refugee-led, national and international CSOs, that leverage their knowledge and experience to improve policymaking and implementation. It is also seeking to strengthen its connections to regional and international networks and share lessons learned from the Turkish context with other actors, in order to strengthen refugee response policy and practice around the world.
