Declaration of Ceasefire in Idlib, Syria

According to CNN Turk, the Russian Ministry of Defence has announced its decision to hold a ceasefire in Idlib beginning on the morning of the 31st of August (31.08.2019)

In the announcement, it was mentioned that ‘’ The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria has agreed on the unilateral ceasefire of Syrian Army in Idlib Tension Reduction Center.’’

Thousands of Syrians are approaching the Turkish border

According to T24,  a crowded group allegedly congregated in Idlib and attempted to cross over Turkey from the Bab-el Hava, in front of the Cilvegözü Border Gate. This border gate - located at the Hatay’s Reyhanlı district - has been temporarily shut down for both arrivals and departures.

235 thousand irregular migrants have been stopped over eight months

According to IHA, the Ministry of Interior's Directorate General of Migration Management has announced that 235 thousand irregular migrants, attempting to extend across Europe from Turkey, has been stopped by security forces in the first eight months of this year.

The Ministry of Interior Security General Directorate, General Command of Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Command intensified their precautions on land and sea to prevent Turkey from becoming a transition route for irregular migrants. While the number of irregular migrants reaching the European Union (EU) by land route was 10 thousand in the first eight months of 2019, this volume has decreased to 4 thousand in the same period of this year. There emerged a minuscule rise in the number of irregular migrants who crossed the EU by seaway. Whereas this number was 18 thousand in the first eight months of 2018, this number has reached 24 thousand in 2019.

Five conditions for Syrians who wish to stay in Istanbul

According to T24, the Governorship of Istanbul has announced, that between the dates of July 12th and August 25th, 16 thousand 423 illegal migrants who through irregular migration has been sent to repatriation centres, while 4 thousand 500 Syrians who are unregistered in the province Istanbul have been sent to the temporary refugee centres which the  Ministry of Interior validated. 

In addition, the Governorship of Istanbul has envisaged five grounding conditions for the Syrians whose family members are registered in distinctive provinces to be entitled to staying in Istanbul. According to this statement, those who are satisfying these conditions will not be sent off from the city:

‘’Students who receive education in Istanbul and their families, the orphans who lost their parents and are taken care by their relatives, other family members whose registrations are in other provinces but having familial connections registered to Istanbul to ensure the family integrity, Syrian business owners who hold investments and provides employment in Istanbul and their nuclear families unless their workplaces legally found to be active three months before the application date in advance, students continuing their university education.’’

Syrians will be relocated to the secure zone

According to Sputnik, Presidential High Advisory Board member Mehmet Ali Şahin has put forward statements relating to foreign policy. Şahin, who brushed upon ‘’the east of Euphrates’’, remarked that ‘’Initially, we will establish a secure zone. We will place Syrians who are unsheltered in our state in this secure zone. Also, we are to battle with terrorism to protect our territories.’’

Those escaping from Idlib are coming to a secure zone

According to IHA, Syrians escaping from Idlib being bombed by the Assad regime are coming to Afrin and Azez, regions which are encompassed by the Turkish safe zone. 

Free Syrian Army's (FSO) agents subject those migrating from Idlib to identity checks in the Basuta region, the ultimate chokepoint for travel to Afrin in the southeast direction. Syrians passing identity check procedures are going to their relatives in secure zones. In Idlib, where 125 civilians lost their lives in the last one month, as the bombing campaigns of the Assad regime have continueded.

Syrian entrepreneurs do not want to return

According to Euronews, research conducted by the collaboration between The Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) presents the conclusion that %72 of Syrian entrepreneurs transacting business in Turkey are reluctant to return to Syria even if the war ends. Entrepreneurs put forward the success of their Turkey-based ventures as the primary cause of their reluctance. 

According to a report, Syrian entrepreneurs, who indicate their unwillingness to being evaluated as ‘’temporary’’ anymore, employ %7 of the 3.5 million Syrians living in Turkey. Syrians have established approximately 10 thousand firms in the last eight years. In turn, 250 thousand Syrians have benefited from the employment opportunities provided by these companies. 

This study, which aims for a comparative analysis on the performance of refugee-oriented companies, was carried out based on a survey consisting of 416 firms, 209 of which are being operated by Syrian refugees.

Migration calamity in the Mediterranean

According to haberler.com, the boat carrying the migrants trying to reach Europe from Libya illegally was capsized. According to the information given by the  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at least 40 people have lost their lives or are lost at sea due to the accident. It is reported that approximately 60 people have been rescued.

100 illegal migrants are rescued in the Mediterranean

According to TimeTurk, the NGO of ‘’Mediterranea Saving Humans’’, which arranges search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean, announced that it has saved nearly 100 illegal migrants who were about to be submerged in the waters of Libya.

900 thousand asylum-seekers are waiting at Europe's door

According to Euronews, it has been signified that 900 thousand asylum-seekers are currently waiting at Europe's doorstep, uncertain of whether they will be rescued or not. As the data provided by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) shows, out of 581 thousand applications made in 2018, 217 thousand people received a positive answer in the initial decision stage. Out of 116 thousand applications, among the 309 thousand objections to the previous rejection decisions, saw positive results. At this point, the status of 557 thousand asylum-seekers remaining from 2018 is uncertain. Lastly, a further 439 thousand people have made asylum-seeking applications for the first time in the period up to June 2019. Of these total applications, 337 thousand are pending. While Germany ranks first with the %44 of these applications, Italy occupies second place with %12.

A solution is found for the refugees in the Ocean Viking vessel

According to T24, the fate is determined for the refugees in the Ocean Viking vessel, which has been sailing the seas for two weeks with the 356 refugees that it rescued in the Mediterranean through divergent operations. 

Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat has stated that they are acting in accordance with the European Union (EU), France, and Germany on the issue that the transition of migrants in the Ocean Viking vessel, administrated by French NGOs Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS Mediterranean, to the other countries from Malta basis.
