We Celebrated International Migrants Day

19.12.2019

The United Nations declared 18th December as "International Migrants Day" in 2000. The reason for declaring this day is that the 'Convention on International for the Protection of the Rights of Immigrant Workers and Their Families' of United Nations was signed on 18 December 1990.

Today there are 272 million immigrants worldwide. In the last 10 years there have been instability, war, chaos and increased, migration mobility especially in the geography where Turkey is located. Turkey is the highest number of refugee hosting countries and for this reason 'International Migrants Day' means so much for Turkey.

For this reason, Ankara Provincial Directorate of Migration organized an event on 18 December 2019 organized by the Ankara Provincial Directorate of Immigration, (UNHCR), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and IGAM.

After the opening speeches, the event which was thematised as “Meeting Point of Culture Turkey” Turkish and refugee children and young people  took place as a choir called “Our Choir”.

After Our Choir’s performance which made event like a festival, refugees and migrants who came from Macedonia, Syria, Iraq to Turkey explained their achievement stories in the “Success Stories Panel” part of the event. Then painting, sculpture and photography exhibition started and People tasted traditional Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan cuisines.
