The data collection phase of the HEARTS Study (Health Equity Assessment and Resilience Tracking for Syrians in Turkey Post-Earthquake) was completed. The phase involved conducting interviews with 18 stakeholders from various sectors in Istanbul, Ankara, Gaziantep and Hatay to evaluate health needs and access for Syrian refugees and host communities affected by the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. The research team of Dr. Juliana Bol (Principal Investigator- Assistant Professor, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health), Metin Çorabatır (The Research Centre on Asylum and Migration- Consultant and Local Partner), and MS. Cecile van Maanen (Research Assistant- Columbia University), shared the early findings with a group of academics, NGO representatives, and humanitarian workers at the Columbia Global Centre in Istanbul. The Final report of the HEARTS study is expected to be finalised in autumn to be shared with the public, policy makers and donors.
